Martin this is excellent, thank you. As you may remember, I challenged "understanding" earlier. It appears here that you have slipped in a new(?), good indicator of understanding. "Students will talk about". I am not sure you have used that concept before in your posts, but that makes sense to me. I agree a definition of understanding is hard mainly as it changes over time and is personal to the learner. As it is personal, it is very hard to judge objectively and so cant really be measured. However, in this one phrase, "Students will talk about", it is becoming clearer to me. Thanks
Thanks, Charles. I appreciate this. I have you in mind as I think about this all the time. I think we have used the phrase 'talk about' in connection with evidence about understanding. The evidence for knowledge learning is essentially 'Tell me'... the capital of, the formula of and soon. We judge that evidence on right/wrong. The evidence for skills learning is 'Show me'...that you able to do x, y or z'. We judge that evidence on stages of Begininng/Developing/Mastering. The evidence for Understanding is 'Talk to me about'... power or whatever. We judge that evidence about deepening understanding on the age and developmental appropriateness of the conversation's seriousness and breadth. That's why the move from knowledge to understanding is a move from assessment to evaluation. Please keep it coming. It helps. Martin
Thanks. That is really helpful. I think you could develop a better definition of understanding
